PowerShell Help For Non-US Systems

PowerShell 3.0 does not ship with help files by default. You need to download them first using Update-Help in order to get help.

Unfortunately, as of today, Microsoft still does not ship help files for a large number of cultures, including German for example. While you can download English help files, PowerShell will safely ignore them on non-US systems and instead – provides no help at all.┬áThat’s why we want to show you how you can use the (available) US-English help files on non-US systems.

Basically, you first tell PowerShell to download the en-US help files, then copy the files to your own locale. The following lines of code do this for you. Just keep in mind that you need to run these lines from a PowerShell with full administrator privileges. Updating help files requires changing/adding files to the windows system32 folder which is protected environment.

# run with full admin privileges!
Update-Help -UICulture en-us -Force
$CurrentCulture = $Host.CurrentUICulture.Name
if ($CurrentCulture -ne 'en-us')
{
  if ( (Test-Path $PSHOME\$CurrentCulture) -eq $false)
  {
    $null = New-Item $PSHOME\$CurrentCulture -ItemType Directory
  }
  Copy-Item $PSHOME\en-us\* -Destination $PSHOME\$CurrentCulture -ErrorAction SilentlyContinue
}
